More Stars & Suns

I kept the momentum going today with more work on the Constellation pendants.  Anytime you cut metal with a jeweler’s saw (at least if you are still working on your skills like me), there is filing, shaping and sanding that is needed when they get done.  Edges are rough, holes are jagged.  It takes some love to get a piece of silver to melt like butter in your hand and turn into that piece you were imagining.  I laid out the three that I have sanded so far and I couldn’t be happier.  What a fun twist on the normal bright stars & dark sky — black stars and silver sky!

Here they are laid on top of the black Lake Michigan rocks!  Ursa Major, Sagitta & Delphinus – Awesomeness!
The other thing I finalized today was the design on the beach glass / beach stone / resin / copper ornaments I am making for my two holiday shows (see next post for details).  I am so glad to get the design down on paper and narrow in on a final concept.  The “R” in the middle of the page is representative of a clear resin piece (see profile in upper right) that will contain within it layers of beach glass fragments and / or tiny beach stones.  The rays around the resin piece will be in copper sheet and the rectangle on the right hand side represents how I’m thinking I’ll cut them out (thanks to my hubby for thinking up this part).  Each copper ray will be cut using the jeweler’s saw and then attached to the resin with brass jeweler’s screws that I just ordered from Reactive Metals.
The sun theme goes along with some meditation I have been doing to heal some old wounds by bringing light into my body and spirit.  I have been chanting the Gayatri Mantra – which is to bring light.  I think we all can use more light in our lives – such heavy times we’re living in.  An interpretation of the mantra (which I say in Sanskrit) by William Quan Judge is:  “Unveil, O Thou who givest sustenance to the Universe, from whom all proceed, to whom all must return, that face of the True Sun now hidden by a vase of golden light, that we may see the truth and do our whole duty on our journey to thy sacred seat.”
